You’re home. Your ears are still ringing, your feet feel like raw hamburger, and the thought of opening your laptop tomorrow makes you want to cry. Same.
Post festival recovery is a real skill, and once you’ve done a few seasons you learn that the 48 hours after you walk in the door matter almost as much as the festival itself. Mess them up and your whole week is cooked. Get them right and you’re back at the office Tuesday feeling like a person.
TLDR: the quick recovery rundown
- Sleep is the #1 tool. 10-12 hours night one, then reset to a normal-ish bedtime by night two.
- Electrolytes before plain water. Your sodium and potassium are wrecked.
- Eat bland for 24 hours: eggs, toast, broth, banana, rice. Build back from there.
- Shower, change sheets, do laundry day one. The glitter has to go.
- Fever over 101, can’t keep water down, or still wrecked after 4 days? Urgent care. No shame.
Hour 0-12: what to do the second you walk in the door
Shower. I don’t care how dead you are. Festival grime plus sheets equals breakouts, clogged pores, and a lingering smell that will haunt your room until Wednesday. Three minutes, get the worst of it off, get in bed.
Before you pass out, drink something with electrolytes. Liquid IV, LMNT, Pedialyte, whatever you have. Plain water is going to sit in your gut and do almost nothing because your sodium is on the floor.
Plug your phone in the OTHER room. I know. You want to scroll the kineticFIELD videos and find that one drop. Do it tomorrow. If your phone is on the nightstand you will be up until 4am rewatching Subtronics sets and crying about Tati’s clips.
Tati has a rule the squad has stolen from her: clean socks, clean sheets, lights off. That’s the whole protocol. Don’t try to unpack. Throw the bag in the corner. It’ll be there in the morning, and so will the glitter trail leading to it.
The sleep reset (and why night two matters more than night one)
Night one your body is going to crash hard. Sleep as long as your schedule allows. 10, 12 hours, whatever. This is the easy night.
Night two is where people destroy themselves. You wake up at noon Sunday, feel okay-ish, take a “quick nap” at 6pm, and now it’s midnight, you’re wide awake, and Monday is officially ruined. The fix is annoying but simple: skip the evening nap, force yourself to bed at a normal-ish hour even if you’re still dragging, and accept that you’re going to feel mid for one more day.
A few rave-mom rules I actually follow:
- No caffeine after 2pm on recovery days. It feels great at 3pm and it ruins your 11pm.
- Magnesium glycinate before bed if you do festivals regularly. Helps you actually fall asleep when your nervous system is still vibrating.
- Phone on Do Not Disturb. Yes, even from the group chat dissecting the weekend.
Sleep debt from a 4-day festival takes about a week to fully clear. You’re not going to fix it in one night. You’re trying to get back to a functional baseline, not a perfect one.
Eating when your stomach hates you
Day one your gut is going to be confused, possibly hostile. Don’t fight it. Eat boring food.
The day-one menu: scrambled eggs, toast, broth-based soup, white rice, banana, plain yogurt. Maybe a smoothie if chewing feels like a lot. Skip spicy food, heavy fried stuff, alcohol (your liver has been through enough), and anything you’d normally reach for hungover. The greasy burger thing works for a hangover. It does not work for festival recovery. Trust.
Coconut water plus a salty snack (pretzels, a pickle, salted crackers) is a recovery cheat code. The potassium from the coconut water plus the sodium from the salt gets your electrolytes balanced faster than any single drink can.
Get a real meal in by dinner day one. Even small. A bowl of pho or chicken noodle soup counts and might be the best thing you’ve ever eaten.
Day two, add protein back in: grilled chicken, salmon, beans, eggs again, whatever your normal looks like. And please, fiber. Festival food has approximately zero fiber. Berries, oats, a salad that isn’t sad. Your gut will write you a thank-you note.
Hydration is more than chugging water
Plain water alone can actually make you feel worse if your sodium is tanked. You’ll pee it all out, your headache gets worse, and you wonder why you’ve had 4 liters and still feel like death.
The play: electrolyte mix in the morning, then sip water throughout the day. Another electrolyte serving in the afternoon if you sweated through your set times standing up. Easy way to tell if you’re rehydrated: pee color. Pale yellow is the goal. Apple juice means keep going.
Real talk, the best recovery move is not getting that dehydrated in the first place. I pre-load electrolytes the day BEFORE the festival starts, drink them every morning on-site, and run a 2L hydration pack so I’m sipping all day instead of trying to chug a bottle every two hours. The Sojourner Hydration Pack is what’s on my back at every fest, and recovery is noticeably easier when I’ve actually used it like I’m supposed to instead of forgetting it exists by set three.
Festival flu: normal vs. actually see a doctor
Festival flu is real. 100,000 strangers screaming next to each other for 4 days is, biologically speaking, a petri dish with LED walls.
Normal recovery symptoms: 2-3 days of fatigue, mild sore throat, low-grade headache, a sad-feeling Monday. The post-fest emotional dip is real too. You went from peak euphoria to spreadsheets in 36 hours. Of course you feel weird.
Red flags that mean stop reading blogs and go to urgent care:
- Fever over 101 that won’t break with Tylenol or Advil
- Can’t keep water down for 24+ hours
- Chest pain or trouble breathing
- Symptoms getting WORSE after day 3 instead of better
- A cough that’s producing anything green or bloody
I’ve gone to urgent care after a festival. It was a $40 copay and worth every cent. No shame, no lecture, just antibiotics and a nap.
On the mental health side: give the post-fest blues a week before deciding your life is meaningless. Talk to your squad. The group chat exists for a reason. If it’s lasting longer than a week or feels heavier than usual, that’s worth bringing up to someone who isn’t a friend.
The Monday-morning damage-control list
Quick hits, do these before you forget for three weeks:
- Laundry, including the hydration pack bladder. Rinse with warm water and a drop of white vinegar, hang it upside down to dry so it doesn’t get funky.
- Restock electrolytes and sunscreen now, while the trauma is fresh.
- Charge the portable battery so it’s ready to go for next time.
- Note in your phone what you wish you’d packed differently. You will absolutely forget by the next fest.
- Block the calendar for the day after your NEXT festival. Take the PTO. Trust me.
If you want to refresh your kit for the next round, the accessories collection has the fan, goggles, and small stuff that always seems to go missing somewhere between Vegas and home.
See you Tuesday
Recovery isn’t optional if you want to make it through a full festival season without your body filing for divorce. Take the 48 hours seriously, hydrate before you think you need to, eat the boring food, and if something feels really off, get it checked out.
See you in the crowd.
